Alexandria Virginia - Closest City to the Nation’s Capital
The city of Alexandria is located along the Western bank of the Potomac River and is roughly six miles south of downtown Washington, D.C. The city has been shaped by its closeness to the nation’s capital and has maintained much of its 18th and 19th century architecture. According to the 2000 census, the city has an estimated 128,283 population.
The city of Alexandria has a warm climate during the summer with temperature highs in the 70s. During the winter the temperatures are very cold and can get down to the low 30s. The city receives an annual average of 39 inches of rain. Most of the rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year with May being the slightly wettest month of the year.

Old Town is considered the oldest section of the city. This section of the city is mainly known for its historic town houses, antique shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Old Town is filled with historical heritage. There are many museums within Old Town that capture a glimpse into the nation’s rich history. Within Old Town there is the Market Square which is considered the oldest market place in the United States.
The Mount Vernon Trail is a popular biking, walking, and jogging path in Alexandria. The path runs through three major sections which include Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax Country. The trail is paved and is one of the oldest trails in the area. The trail offers several wonderful views of the Potomac and D.C. monuments. The trail is considered well balanced when it comes to sightseeing since it contains timeless buildings to tranquil natural surroundings.
