Charleston is located just south of the mid-point of South Carolina's coastline and is considered the largest city of the Charleston County. The city is also known as “The Holy City” due to its prominence of churches. The estimated population in 2007 for the city was of 118,492, making the city the city the second most populated city in South Carolina.
The city of Charleston has a humid subtropical climate. Summer time is the wettest season of the year. Summer time is hot and humid with temperatures in the low 90s. Hurricanes are a major threat to the area during the summer and early fall. Winter is considered to be short and mild with low temperatures in the 40s.
Sports Teams and a Fun Filled Festival in Charleston, SC
The city is home to several professional, minor league, and amateur sports teams. One of the main attractions is the Charleston Riverdogs, a minor league baseball team, who are associated to the New York Yankees. They also have the Charleston Battery, a professional soccer team, who were received second place in the open cup in 2008. There is also the Johnson Hagood Stadium, home of the Citadel Bulldogs football team, which seats an estimated 21,000 people.
Charleston is host to one of the world's major performing arts festivals. The Spoleto Festival USA is a 17-day event that showcases more than 120 performances. Established and emerging artist are given the opportunity to perform opera, dance, theater, classical music, and jazz. The annual festival is a great success that adds to the already colorful and exciting atmosphere of Charleston.
