The city of Kihei is located on Maui’s western shore. Development has grown within the area and has continued to grow since the city now stretches nearly 5 miles along the South Kihie Road. Visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports and activities such as swimming, diving, and excellent beaches. Kihei is well known for its research facilities on aquatic wildlife. According to the 2000 census, the population was 16,749.
Kihei is mostly warm during the summer with temperatures in the high 80’s. The warmest month of the year is September. Winter is not that much different since temperatures drop to the mid 70’s. February is considered the coolest month of the year with temperatures in the low 60’s.

The Iao Valley State Park is one of Kihei’s main attractions. The park is natural deep valley that has distinct natural features. There are three main features to the state park; they include the Iao Needle, Iao stream, and the Pu’u Kukui Crater. They valley is a peaceful and lush area for easy hikes. The state park is also filled with natural pools, tropical plants, and fantastic views.
Kihei also offers Volcano Air Tours. Maui Air’s Volcano Air Tours offers a tour around the Maui area and its surrounding islands. The air plane seats ten passengers at a time and is well air-conditioned. In the 2 hour tour, you can expect to see the several rain forests surrounding the area, Heavenly Hana, amazing beaches, scenic coastlines, waterfalls, and dramatic cliffs. One of the main points of interest in the tour is the world’s largest dormant volcano; the Haleakala.
