Sarasota is located in the Sarasota County. The city also has three separating islands along the Gulf of Mexico that are known for the high quality of sandy beaches. Sarasota plays host to the fourth largest independent film festival in North America, the Sarasota Film Festival. The festival last ten days and has an attendance of 45,000 guests. There are about 200 films displayed in the festival. The festival also includes educational programs and over a dozen of special events. The Sarasota Film Festival also has expanded to have several year-round activities.
Another fun attraction for the city of Sarasota is the Mote Marine Laboratory. This nonprofit aquarium severs as an educational and entertaining facility for guests of all ages. The aquarium is opened 365 days a year and has several special events throughout the year. The facility is specialized in marine research, education, aquaculture, and marine animal rescue.

In Sarasota there are 35 properties where the environmentally friendliness is unknown and they have not yet verified their sustainability efforts with iStayGreen.org. In the state of Florida there is a total of 3203 lodging properties listed in the iStayGreen.org directory of which 321 are represented as eco-friendly. Currently there are 98 lodging properties that have earned the Green Eco-Leaf Rating.
