Savannah Georgia - "The Hostess City of the South"
The city of Savannah is the largest city in the state of Georgia. The city is a main attraction to millions of visitor each year who are interested the city’s architecture and historic buildings. Savannah’s downtown area has been recognized as one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States. According to the 2007 census, the city has an estimated population of 130,331.
Savannah has mild winters and has cooler summers due to the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Summers are usually hot and humid with several thunderstorms. July is considered to be the warmest month of the year with temperatures in the low 90’s. The city rarely receives snow and during the winter temperatures fall into the low 60’s.
The Savannah Music Festival and the Squares of Savannah in Savannah GA
The Squares of Savannah stand as one of the main attraction in the city. Savannah’s historic district is divided into 21 squares. Each of the squares has its own personality and they also vary in size. There are three squares that have been classified as lost since during the course of urban development the squares were destroyed. The squares have been named after a person, historical event, or a group of people. Each square has a special monument, marker, memorial, or statue.
One of the largest festivals in the city is the Savannah Music Festival. The festival was originally established to increase cultural tourism and has now become a festival of south and international musicians. The festival runs for eighteen days and is showcased in the heart of downtown Savannah. The festival includes classical, jazz, and world music. The festival was named as the “best event around the world in 2009” by the London Times.

Savannah has 101 hotels listed in the iStayGreen directory of which 2 are listed as environmentally friendly lodging. Currently 1 hotel has completed the online Environmental Audit and earned the Green Eco-Leaf Rating while the other 1 properties are purported to be "Green" but have not yet shared their eco-initiatives with iStayGreen.org.
In Savannah there are 99 properties where the environmentally friendliness is unknown and they have not yet verified their sustainability efforts with iStayGreen.org. In the state of Georgia there is a total of 1490 lodging properties listed in the iStayGreen.org directory of which 36 are represented as eco-friendly. Currently there are 22 lodging properties that have earned the Green Eco-Leaf Rating. Included in the properties working toward a more sustainable travel future are Savannah hotels, Savannah resorts, Savannah bed & breakfasts, and Savannah extended stay accommodations.
