The Buena Vista Palace runs checks on boilers, ice machines, dishwashers and washing machines to ensure maximum efficiency on a monthly basis. Additionally, we have low flow showers and sink faucets as well as automatic flush system on most of the public toilets. Linen and towel reuse options are also made available to the guest to minimize water usage on laundering during their stay at the resort. We also have an in room maintenance program to reduce leaks.
The hotel has many practices in place to assist with energy efficiency through out the hotel. We use energy consuming products throughout the hotel and have a preventative maintenance plan in place for all of the hotel’s major appliances. Additionally we have the following Energy Star Rated Appliances: copiers, televisions, refrigerators, and water coolers. We also have programmable thermostats in our guest rooms, which revert back to a lower temperature when rooms are not occupied to assist with saving energy. We also open the drapes in the guest rooms while we are cleaning instead of using the room lighting. Additionally, we have sensor lighting outside of the hotel as well as in the back of house areas which aid in energy efficiency.
We use energy efficient bulbs in the guest rooms, for outdoor lighting, most lighting that is on 24 hours per day as well as back of the house lighting. Additionally we recycle the fluorescent bulbs through the following procedure. Fluorescent bulbs should be brought to the maintenance shop and placed in containers so as to minimize breakage. Then place bulbs in recycle container. When container is full Rexel will be called for pick up (407-855-9001).
The Buena Vista Palace Hotel & Spa has established a recycling program for aluminum cans, steel cans, plastic, newspaper, office paper and cardboard for all areas with aluminum can recycling additionally being available for the guests in our public areas. Recycling containers for aluminum cans as well as plastic bottles, trash and paper are located throughout our public space areas. The housekeeping staff empties these cans daily. They then bring them in bags to the recycling bin located at the loading dock. Plastic containers, steel cans and aluminum cans, newspaper and office paper are held in a four compartment container at the loading dock which is emptied when needed by Reedy Creek. The kitchen will be collecting steel cans, bottles and plastics. Stewarding will empty into the recycling receptacle when needed. All office areas have a recycling container for office paper which will be emptied into a filling station located in different locations of the property. Housekeeping staff will then bring the filling station outside to the loading dock area and dispose in proper containers for Reedy Creek to pick up. Cardboard is collected and bailed for picked up by Reedy Creek. Pallets are stored outside and picked up weekly.
The Housekeeping Department will be managing the paper program in the following manner in our guestrooms. There will be blue containers by the service elevators on the first floor of the main building and the resort building. We ask that our guests leave their newspaper next to their wastebasket so we may recycle properly. Each day, the floor houseman will collect newspapers from the room attendant’s carts and drop them off in the appropriate newspaper container located outside at the loading dock.
The kitchen recycles all produce and left over food scraps which are picked up by Reedy Creek and donated to a Pig farmer for hog feed. We also recycle all grease from the kitchen and fryers as well as our left over raw meat product which is picked up by Griffin Industries.
Additionally we have a trash compactor which reduces the overall volume of the waste that is not recyclable, which decreases the amount of pickups per month. We also practice the following waste reduction techniques: lease vs. buy options on copiers, we use refillable containers for chemical bottles, practice just in time buying, purchase products in reusable/returnable containers and purchase items in bulk. We have formally requested suppliers to reduce packaging; we stop unwanted publications as well as making two sided copies. We also recycle telephone books.
Clean Air Practices The Buena Vista Palace Hotel & Spa has the following clean air practices in place. The hotel has sensors in place to monitor for Carbon Monoxide. We have been tested for lead paint as well as asbestos and currently maintain a humidity level between 35 and 55% which assists in preventing the growth of mold. We use pressure stabilization and weather stripping to maintain a positive pressure inside the building while keeping the moisture and water out of the building. Our HVAC systems are checked regularly for mold and bacteria, obstructions to air flow, as well as an update on the clean drip pans. We use MERV 8 pleated air filters, 100% synthetic media which offers significantly higher particulate efficiency than regular poly/cotton media pleated filters, with little change in static pressure. MERV 8 filter media will not promote the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew, or fungi in normal operating environments, and has not been chemically treated and are an ideal upgrade from standard disposable panel filters. These filters are designed to last up to 3 months. We have exhaust fans vented to the outside, MERV 8 air filters for our HVAC system, which assists us in increasing the quality of our indoor air. We also use environmentally friendly cleaners that are non toxic, biodegradable, non-corrosive and low in VOC’s. We also have a preventative maintenance plan for our air handling units which include cleaning and filter changes.
