To qualify for the Green Eco-Leaf Rating Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth completed an audit of their property's compliance with over 70 unique eco-initiatives. Environmentally friendly measures that are reviewed include energy efficiency, water conservation, recycling, enviromentally safe cleaning, reduction of waste, ongoing maintenance, purchasing habits, plus many other factors. In it's efforts to create a more sustainable travel future and reduce their impact on our environment, Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth employs 37 eco-initiatives.

In 2008, Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth was awarded the “Four Green Key” rating by the Hotel Association of Canada in recognition of its leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through wide ranging policies and practices as well as having mature programs in place involving management, employees, guests, and the public, which have shown substantial and measurable results.
Our environmental initiatives include: • Recycling: paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, metal, batteries, ink cartridges and more • Daily food redistribution of banquet function leftovers to two local food banks • Meetings that Matter program to encourage meeting planners to hold green events • Menus created with local, seasonal and organic ingredients whenever possible • Our Green Cuisine program includes sustainable seafood choices to protect marine species • Optional towel and sheet replacement program • Water conservation strategies including low-flow appliances • Energy conservation program including energy-efficient lighting and computerized monitoring of HVAC system • All bar soaps and toiletries left behind by guests now find a new life and are donated to shelters. Towels, sheets and bathrobes that are used are also donated or our Housekeeping department reuses them as rags • A centralized air system helps monitor guest room temperatures when not in use to lower our CO2 emissions • A Green IT program is being implemented to reduce power usage of our workstations across the company
