ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP FOR THE COMFORT INN & SUITES LOGAN AIRPORT

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE GREEN?

The Comfort Inn & Suites Logan International Airport is proud of the ongoing environmental initiatives that have been implemented and upheld since our opening in September 2000. We continue to be the leader in the hospitality industry with our environmental initiatives and continue to seek out new initiatives to better serve our guests and reduce our impact on the environment. Our objective is not only to roll out environmental initiatives but also to ensure each program is a success. Ongoing training with our associates on the importance of each initiative and providing them with explanations of how it relates to them contributes to the success of each program. These practices allow us to successfully implement new initiatives while managing our operating costs. We continue to exceed our guest’s expectations and never compromise our standards or sacrifice quality or comfort. Some of the 90+ initiatives in place at the Comfort Inn & Suites Logan International Airport include

SHINE Saunders Hotels Initiatives to Nurture the Environment In the early 90’s SHG created the SHINE logo as its official name of the program

Offset 100% of our Electricity Use with Wind Power Increases the amount of alternative energy introduced to the grid and reduces the amount of energy entering the grid from coal fired power plants. This helps create a market for alternative energies.

Compressed Natural Gas Vans Reduces air pollution

Composting Reduces hotel waste costs, diverts waste from landfills, and allows guests to participate in our environmental program. Our composting program is a great way for us to get the guests involved. We compost our breakfast items and Margarita’s Restaurant composts their waste as well. We have separate bins for Composting items and 2 separate pick ups a month.

Laundry Ozone System eliminates the use of hot water and chlorine This machine allows us to wash our laundry without the use of hot water. The initial investment was significant but the ROI was 2-3 years and the savings after that include water and chemicals

Purchasing Policies When possible we purchase products that: have high recycled content, are locally produced, and are made in a sustainable manner.

Use of non-toxic cleaners Improve air quality and create healthier work environments for our housekeepers. 2001: This effort is more “behind the scenes” but allows us to improve air quality by using non-toxic/harsh cleaners and the end result is just as effective as bleach and other common cleaners.

Natural Air Fresheners Improve air quality Our air fresheners offer an effective natural clean scent and do not contain any toxins.

Low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints Improve air quality We use this paint to create a healthier environment for our guests and team members.

Go Green Check Out Reduces paper waste by offering guests email options Our Go Green Express Check Out gives our Guests an opportunity to participate in our environmental efforts. We share the Go-Green Express Check Out opportunity with guests through the GM welcome letter and again at check out.

Paperless Audit Reduce paper waste in daily operations. All reports are “printed” to a PDF and saved on the hard drive.

Amenity Dispensers for shampoo, lotion, soap Reduce waste The use of amenity dispensers allows us to purchase in bulk, therefore reducing pollution from trucking, as well as eliminating thousands of plastic bottles from the waste stream.

Front Desk Phone Greeting Increase guest awareness Our Goal is to make guests aware that we are an eco-friendly hotel. One way we achieved this is to incorporate a green greeting into our operations. Our initial Recorded greeting states “We are proud to serve and our environment.” The front desk continues the greeting with “where we think Green,” which prompts guests to ask about our different initiatives.

Eco Suggestions section on comment cards create Invaluable feedback from guests on the successes of our Environmental Program as well as opportunities for us to improve.

Educating Employees Increase team awareness of our programs Training the employees on the environmental initiatives daily to ensure they have a good understanding of what is going on in the hotel. This allows team members to feel more comfortable when guests ask about our program.

Use of Eco-friendly Renovation materials Low VOC wall coverings, adhesives & carpet pads, which improve air quality 2001: These materials are green seal certified. Many of these products have a high recycled content and all contribute to healthier indoor air quality.

Driving Tips Card Guest education & awareness. Tips to improve gas mileage saving the guests money while doing good for the environment. These tips are included on the back of every parking pass.

Motion Sensor thermostats Significantly reduce energy use and costs by controlling room temperature based on occupancy.

Super efficient public area lighting (CFLs) Reduces energy consumption & costs

Vendor misers on all soda machines Reduces energy consumption & cost. A motion sensor on the machine allows it to go into “sleep” mode until it senses motion. This allows the vending machine to conserve energy without inconveniencing the guest.

Locally produced products Reduces shipping pollution and supports the local economy

Fun Fact Brochures Helpful guide for employees highlighting key eco-initiatives Our Fun Fact Brochure was created as a helpful guide for our employees. It details our biggest/best initiatives to be used as talking points with guests.

Double paned low E windows Conserve energy & reduce costs.

Low-emissivity windows transmit heat effectively keeping the heat out during the summer and in during the winter. This reduces the heating and cooling loads of a guest room, therefore reducing energy use and costs.

Eco-Channel Innovative way of raising awareness Our very own channel dedicated to not only our environmental initiatives, but valuable programming on the environment.

Eco plaques in guest rooms Guest education & awareness about resource use (water, energy, recycling).

Eco Bookmark Guest education & awareness

Eco Tread Lightly weekend package Guest awareness, recycling, and good will This package includes an overnight room, a copy of the National Wildlife Federation’s Ranger Rick Magazine, assistance in booking eco-adventures such as the aquarium, whale watching, bike rentals or walking tours then to complete their journey they can drop off their old sneakers in our Tread Lightly Bin and receive money off their stay ($1.00 for each size). These used sneakers are returned to Nike and made into safe turf for children’s playgrounds.

Pool Ionizing-cleaning system Eliminates the use of chlorine.

Energy signage is Room Attendant closets Reminders of how to use energy efficiently. This involves the team in reducing our energy use and costs.

PM (Preventative Maintenance) program Reduces energy consumption & increases equipment longevity.

Guest bathroom nightlights Used instead of an overhead light. Reduces energy costs.

Green Hotel Team Member Eco-training Provides staff an overview of initiatives & prepares them for guest interactions This is a great way to provide each department with specialized and personalized training about the eco initiatives in their departments. For example, room attendants learn why we choose to use green cleaning products and why their help with recycling and composting is important. Front desk attendants learn about the significance of running a “green” operation and work on communicating this to guests.
