The management and staff at Doubletree Grand Key Resort are committed to demonstrating sustainable living through energy and resource conservation. The property, which opened in the summer of 2000, is adjacent to the Salt Ponds, one of the most unique ecosystems in the Florida Keys.

Elements of this sensitive habitat were incorporated into the resort’s colorful egret, turtle and mangrove logo, which represents our commitment to responsible development and conservation of resources.

Our interior and exterior design utilize eco-sensitive materials and an infrastructure created to save energy, reduce waste and preserve natural resources. Florida-based Ecotourism Development, Inc., and Steckroth Hospitality Group provided consultation on environmental assessment, design, construction, and educational elements incorporated into the resort.

Our commitment to conservation can be seen throughout the resort. Each guest room is equipped with a sensor that automatically shuts off air conditioning when the door is open. The system is extremely energy efficient, built to exceed industry standards. The building is insulated with materials designed to reduce air conditioning usage. A built-in dehumidifier extends the life of our furnishings.

Guests may elect not to have daily linen or towel changes, thereby saving water. Shower heads conform to the latest low-flow guidelines. Commodes are designed for efficient water usage. In the kitchen, an ultrasonic cleaning system uses substantially less water and chemicals than conventional machines.

Fluorescent lighting is used in the resort to extend bulb life and reduce energy consumption. Eco-friendly chemicals are used for cleaning and sanitizing. Our pool furniture is made from recycled materials.

Glass, aluminum, plastic, paper and cardboard waste is recycled. The laundry area is equipped with an energy efficient, low-energy design. For example, the washer has an extended spin cycle, which reduces dryer time.

By offering complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport, Old Town, some marinas and the golf course, we help reduce the amount of cars and traffic on the island.

On June 25, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recognized Doubletree Grand Key Resort with a One Palm designation in the state’s Green Lodging Program. This voluntary program represents a commitment to environmental practices that reduce waste and conserve natural resources.

To share its commitment to environmental sustainability, Doubletree Grand Key Resort gave away 500 recycling bins to residents of the city of Key West in conjunction with its Green Lodging certification.

Giving away recycling bins is not a requirement of the state’s Green Lodging program.
