    Westin Buckhead Atlanta's Environmental Sustainability Policy

    We, at Westin Buckhead Atlanta, believe that economic growth and the well-being of society are inextricably tied to the health of the environment. Accordingly, we embrace our responsibility for environmental stewardship and are committed to integrating leading environmental practices and sustainability principles into our core business strategy.

    Through collaboration with our hotel owners, suppliers and business partners, we will actively work to reduce the environmental impact of our business activities and to continually improve and innovate on practices aimed at:

    conserving natural resources,  minimizing waste and pollution,  enhancing indoor environmental quality,  establishing and reporting on key environmental performance indicators, and  raising environmental awareness among our associates, guests and communities.

    We acknowledge that, in many ways, we, like the global community we serve, are only in the early stages of developing and implementing the many changes that will be necessary to achieve these vital goals. Nonetheless, we strongly believe that our efforts to support a healthy environment serve the interests of both current and future generations and constitute the foundation for enduring success.

    Westin Buckhead Atlanta Environmental Controls;

    1) Energy Conservation

    Westin Buckhead utilizes an advanced energy management system that reduces energy consumption by controlling heating, cooling, lighting and ventilation. In addition to the control aspect, engineering can monitor and report on the performance of various systems throughout the day. All kitchen and back of house water is heated by a semi-instantaneous water heater. Heating water on demand reduces wasteful storage of hot water. Guest room and corridor lighting is compact fluorescent. CFL lighting is used in public areas. LED is used in some exit lighting and public area accent. Lighting controlled by occupancy sensors in meeting rooms, offices, restrooms and storage rooms. Guest room refreshment centers have automatic temperature setback while room is unoccupied. Chiller economizer is used to eliminate the need to operate a chiller. This strategy is employed during the fall, winter and spring resulting in significant energy savings. Premium efficiency motors are used for replacement when needed. Ice machines are controlled by timers to prevent operation during peak demand periods. Guest room windows utilize sun shades that allow daylight into the room without the solar heat load. Water Conservation Water diverters are installed in guest room toilet tanks to conserve water during tank filling. Automated faucets are in use in public restrooms. 0.5 and 1.5 GPM aerators on guest room faucets, public restrooms and employee locker rooms.

    2) Solid Waste Reduction/Minimization

    The single stream recycling process is used to recycle cardboard, office paper, plastics, aluminum, paperboard, glass and steel. This creates an effortless environment to enable all associates and guests to recycle. In addition to single stream we recycles all batteries, fluorescent bulbs, computers, monitors, electric motors, ballasts, and scrap metals. All used kitchen cooking oil is recycled. We are currently seeking approval to utilize biodiesel to fuel the hotel's generator and remove a portion of the building's electrical load from the grid during peak periods. Bulk cleaning chemical purchasing combined with automated dispensing system. Toner cartridge refills for office printers and copiers are refilled or recycled. Used motor oil and other hazardous materials are recovered and disposed of safely.

    3) Environmentally Preferable Substitution Westin Buckhead encourages associates to use Mass Transit by offering discounted tickets which minimizes their impact on Atlanta's air quality and road congestion. Westin Buckhead offers guests the option of forgoing linen changes during multiple night stays and rewards participating guests with a $5.00 credit. Westin Buckhead is a 100% smoke free environment. Our loading dock is a no idle zone. Drivers are encouraged to turn engines off during deliveries.
