Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort, a historic hot mineral springs property nestled in the wooded hillside of San Luis Obispo, CA, has developed a reputation as both a retreat spot ideal for relaxation and a gateway to some of the area’s most sought-after activities. But despite Sycamore’s longstanding roots on the Central Coast, there’s nothing old-fashioned about the resort’s commitment to sustainability. The 100-plus-acre property has gotten serious about going green– from the hot tubs to food to guest services. “Sycamore has made and will continue to make substantial efforts to lessen its overall impact,” said Jeff Struble, the chief engineer who has been largely responsible for executing the green initiatives at the resort. “From major implementations such as a new hot tub automation system to the adoption of a property-wide recycling program, the resort is definitely doing its part to become more environmentally responsible.” The new hot tub automation system is one of Sycamore’s most significant green projects thus far. Famous for its natural mineral spring waters, the resort offers 22 hillside mineral spring hot tubs, each of which formerly used approximately 1,500 gallons of water per day. Much of this water was wasted by unnecessary diluting, cooling and reheating to secure the desired temperature. By automating the water flow system, the tub water now stays at a consistent, state-regulated temperature – alleviating the need for cold water dilution and conserving 12,000 gallons per day. And Sycamore’s sustainable practices don’t stop there. The resort has also increased its environmental efficiency by:

    · Using compact fluorescent light bulbs wherever possible, which offer the same light, but use 80% fewer watts

    · Using naturally-occurring hot mineral water to heat the swimming pool

    · Planting xeric gardens around the property – all plants are indigenous to the area and have adapted to survive on rainfall rather than frequent watering

    · Offering menu items made from local and sustainable ingredients at the onsite Gardens of Avila Restaurant

    · Initiating a property-wide recycling program and encouraging staff and guests to participate

    · Providing bulk soap dispensers in bathrooms and Spa locker rooms

    · Providing a shuttle van for groups of guests upon request

    · Providing bicycle rentals so guests can easily get to the beach without the car

    · Initiating property-wide education about the resort’s water conservation efforts

“We’re proud of the green steps we’ve taken as a property and will continue to place priority on additional improvements that will make us more eco-friendly,” said Charles Crellin, general manager. “Sycamore is located in one of the most pristine and beautiful areas of the country, and it’s a good feeling to know that we’re doing what we can to help keep it that way.”
