Eco Recognition and Awards: Feature property in Michelin Green Guides Recognized by Conde Nast Johansens as a Green Property Winner of the 2008 Tourism Victoria Environmental Award New Addition is LEED for Homes Certified Member of the Green Building Council

The lodge as was built on an existing hotel site which had fallen into disrepair. By building on this preexisting site, we were able to minimize our impact on ecological systems.

Furthermore, double paned windows enable a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions resulting from our operations and low-flow, water efficient plumbing increases water efficiency. The heating and air-conditioning systems utilize state-of-the-art energy efficient “heat-pump” systems that transfer energy where it is needed. A custom designed “bio-filtration” pond captures runoff of rainwater, while enhancing the immediate marine habitat.

Manage our Social Impact

There is an obligation in a broader sense to preserve the integrity of the village and to ensure that we give back as much as we take, if not more. This means donating to charity where possible, forming meaningful relationships with other businesses and neighbours, and promoting local arts and culture. As an example of this commitment in action, we constantly strive to profile talented local artists throughout the Lodge which of course enhances the experience for our guest while improving the cultural climate of our community.

Manage our Economic Impact

As a way of contributing to the local economy, our focus has been on sourcing locally. This has been achieved numerous ways. For instance, much of our building materials were sourced within a few hundred miles of the hotel and interior designers and architects were recruited from Greater Victoria. Also, our restaurant seeks to purchase as much local, organic produce as possible. Finally, by building and operating the first and only 5-star hotel on the water in our community, we have enhanced the opportunities for other local businesses by attracting a new tourist base.

Manage our Environmental Impact

Much care and attention must be paid to ensuring that the natural environment is not harvested or destroyed beyond what is sustainable so as to secure a product that will be viable for years to come. Brentwood Bay Lodge and Spa is committed to reducing the impact of our operations on the environment in five main aspects as follows: a) Water Conservation b) Energy Conservation c) Solid Waste Management d) Greenhouse Gas Emissions With a commitment to environmental responsibility, the Lodge was built on an existing hotel site which had fallen into disrepair. While Brentwood Bay Lodge & Spa has consciously incorporated environmental concerns into it’s planning, we must continue developing initiatives that will preserve the environment throughout our operation.

Environmental sustainability has to be an ethic held in the hearts of employees and managers, especially in sustaining continual environmental performance. Each department has the opportunity to greatly contribute to the cause.

HOUSEKEEPING •Donate partially used shampoos and conditioners to charity or shelters •Launder only towels that have been left in the tub or on the floor in stay-over rooms •Launder only towels that have been used in check-out rooms •Launder sheets every other day in stay-over rooms •Turn off all lights, heat, and air-conditioning in rooms that are not in use •Use only rags for cleaning purposes

FRONT DESK/ BACK OFFICE •Re-use recyclable paper for faxes and notepads •Refrain from unnecessarily printing emails or other electronic materials

KITCHEN •Buy only Local and Organic Produce, Meat and Seafood •Buy in bulk to help reduce packaging •Use enzymes to clean grease traps before pumping them

FRONT-OF-HOUSE FOOD & BEVERAGE •Drink personal beverages out of glassware as opposed to paper cups •Recycle corks

MARINA •Isolate and contain all possible pollutant sources •Promote an environmental ethic in guests during interpretive guided tours •Conduct a yearly clean-up of the beach with community involvement

LANDSCAPING •Minimize pesticide use •Water seedlings more heavily than established flowers and plants

EVERYONE •Recycle all plastics, metal, glass, and cardboard •Refrain from drinking from plastic water bottles •Close doors when air-conditioning is on •Donate to charity all useable items that would otherwise occupy space in a landfill such as furniture, mattresses, linens, equipment, artwork etc. •Use only compact florescent lights
