    Admiral’s Inn Environmental Policy

The goal of the Admiral’s Inn Environmental Policy is to minimize our impact on the environment by reducing energy, water and natural resource consumption and reusing and recycling solid waste and properly disposing hazardous waste. We break our environmental policy program into “What we do” and “What we ask our guests to do” in the two areas of “Reduce” and “Recycle and Reuse”.

We stress that the policies and procedures we describe below are being used TODAY and EVERYDAY at The Admiral’s Inn

The Admiral’s Inn also recognizes that its Environmental Policy is dynamic and ever-changing. Currently, we are looking into ways to impact the environment even less by reducing pool chemical use, replacing less efficient air conditioning units, and replacing all shampoo, soap, and cleaning products to products that have received the “Green Seal” of approval.

    What we do …

Reduce Water • Installed efficient 1.6 gpf toilets in every room and common areas • Installed efficient 2.2 gpm faucets in all of the rooms and common areas • Installed efficient 2.5 gpm shower heads in all bathrooms • Installed automatic shut offs in all common area sinks • Installed a rain gauge on our sprinkler system to reduce water consumption. • Installed all new washing machines that use 70% less water • We cover our heated pool every night to reduce evaporation. • Our dishwashers use high temperature water, which reduces water consumption. • We offer our guests the option to not have sheets and towels changed everyday

Electricity • Replaced all lights not on dimmers with energy efficient bulbs • Installed highly efficient central air conditioning in lounge • Installed efficient furnaces and hot water heaters in new building • Did NOT install large overhead lights in parking lot • Installed programmable timers on outside and common area lights • Installed “Energy Star” appliances • Installed “Energy Star” heaters/air conditioners in the new rooms • Installed ceiling fans in inn wherever possible • Installed timer on hot tub to reduce energy consumption off season

Other • We use paper that uses at least 30% post consumer recycled content • We use recycled print cartridges • We either use both sides of paper or use one side as note pad • We use “greenprint” program to reduce paper waste • We use “green seal certified” chemicals • We do NOT use pesticides or fertilizers in our gardens • We use ozonation in our hot tub • We installed new thermapane windows with high E factors • We do NOT use Styrofoam or aerosol sprays • We buy in bulk to reduce packaging and shipping • We purchase from local Maine farmers

Recycle/Reuse - We recycle all waste products in the office, the kitchen, and in the lounge. We also recycle of printer cartridges.

What we ask our guests to do

    • Reduce consumption of water and electricity by turning off lights and air conditioners/heaters when not in the room.

    • Chose the option not to have sheets and towels changed everyday

    • Recycle
