To qualify for the Green Eco-Leaf Rating Waianuhea completed an audit of their property's compliance with over 70 unique eco-initiatives. Environmentally friendly measures that are reviewed include energy efficiency, water conservation, recycling, enviromentally safe cleaning, reduction of waste, ongoing maintenance, purchasing habits, plus many other factors. In it's efforts to create a more sustainable travel future and reduce their impact on our environment, Waianuhea employs 25 eco-initiatives. As an off-grid property our water and energy sources are converted directly from the nature that surrounds us. The energy used at the Inn is harbored from the sun using a photovoltaic solar electric system. The water provided throughout the guest rooms is rainwater, caught on the rooftop, which is filtered and UV sterilized. In addition to our commitment to the environment we also focus on sustainability. Our Chefs buy and prepare locally grown organic foods for our wine hour and gourmet breakfasts. Our gardening and landscaping is entirely organic and used whenever possible throughout our culinary fare. The amenity products used at our Inn are also locally produced by Island Herbal and Star of Roses with an all natural coconut chai fragrance. This commitment also extends to monitoring all consumption to ensure products purchased are recycled, re-usable or compostable. The organic compostable material from the yard and kitchen are then tended to achieve rich and fertile compost used to fertilize our culinary herb garden. With all of these conservation techniques in place our guests are still offered modern and luxurious accommodations. Our energy-efficient spa is heated 24 hours a day for early risers or an amazing star-gazing opportunity on clear nights. Satellites provide internet and television service and each of our guest rooms have cellular telephones. This feature provides guests with views of snow-capped Mauna Kea and The Pacific Ocean without unsightly power lines. As an eco-friendly Inn and a member of The International Eco-tourism Society we aim to comply with and exceed expectations on environmental laws and regulations. In this effort of protection and enhancement of the environment for guests and our local community we are pleased to communicate our policies and practices to further educate all interested parties through eco-tours hosted on property by the innkeeper. |
