Loreto was born in Dublin, Ireland and moved to Barbados in 1985. She was educated at University College Dublin where she completed a degree in Economics, Geography and Maths and a higher Diploma in Education. She also pursued a Diploma in Marketing at the UK Institute of Marketing.
She became involved in the Environmental arena in Barbados in 1994, while working for Women in Development, through her involvement in the Village of Hope during the SIDS conference in Barbados.
She has held the position of Environmental Manager in 7 Green Globe Hotels, Coconut Court Resort, Casuarina Beach Club and was Director of Environmental Programmes at the 5 Almond Resorts. While she was at Coconut Court, the hotel achieved Green Globe status and won the CHA Green Hotel Award. Since her move to Casuarina, the hotel has won several more awards including • the World Legacy Award, • The Responsibletravel.com award • the WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow Award. Almond Resorts was awarded the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Associations Environmental Award in 2006
Loreto serves on many National and Regional Environmental committees and is the Blue Flag coordinator for Barbados. She sees this as one of the most important environmental eco-labels and that, coupled with Green Globe will bring a level of environmental awareness to Barbados not seen before. This is an opportunity to raise environmental standards for the benefit of the local community while at the same time enjoying the spin off to the tourism sector.
She would like to see all hotels in the Caribbean adopting Environmental Standards in order to ensure the longevity of the tourism product. She is Chairman of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Associations’ Environmental Committee and Vice –President of Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism Loreto has received many personal awards for her contribution the promotion of Sustainable Tourism, including: • Barbados Youth Environmental Programme, Personal award for contribution to the Environment 2003 • Governor General’s Award for contribution to Green Tourism 2003 • Green Globe Champion April 2004 • Award of Excellence, presented by EAST at Green Hotels Conference 2004 • Minister of Environment Personal award 2005 • BHTA Environmental Award 2005 She has recently joined Green Hotel Certification as the Director of Operations for the Caribbean.
